Growing up, I didn’t have very many friends. The ones that I did have didn’t understand my desire to talk about shoes and boys all day. But thanks to “Sex and the City,” I didn’t need friends to talk about those things, because I could see four fabulous women living out my dream life—full of cute boys, designer clothes and lots of (gasp!) sex—with the click of a button on my remote.
I wanted so desperately to be like one of the girls—Carrie, Miranda, Samantha, Charlotte, I didn’t care. I just wanted to live a fabulous life—and, it turns out, I kind of wanted to be a girl, too (#oop!)—and I could live that life through the ladies of SATC.
But as I got older (and got friends who shared my desire to be fab), I realized that I didn’t need to be one of the SATC ladies to live fabulously. I started doing fabulous things and soon, watching censored episodes of SATC on E! wasn’t as fun. But that was a good thing, because it meant I was having such a good time with my friends.
Today, I still catch up with Carrie & the gang on HBO Go (between catching up with my other #Girls on HBO), and my friends and I even have SATC nights, complete with mani-pedis and wine, but there’s still nothing better than doing something fabulous myself.
Here’s a list of things that I’ve found can make you feel especially fabulous. Turns out, it’s a lot easier than the SATC girls made it seem. I mean, sure, doing these things in a pair of Manolos would be even more fab, but until you save up for your first pair, give these tips a try!
Wake up early
Between school, family and your social life, sometimes it can feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day. But before you sleep in this weekend, think about waking up an hour early and finally finishing up that book you’ve been reading or getting a head-start on homework. Even if you don’t end up doing anything productive, having an extra 60 minutes to take your time waking up will at least make you feel productive.
Rock your favorite look
It sounds small, but sometimes a simple change of clothes can make a big impact on your mood. Whether you’re headed for a night out with friends or just running to the corner store for milk, rocking your favorite outfit on a blah day can totally lift your spirits. So what if that means wearing sequined stilettos to the gas station?
Go on a zero-dollar shopping spree
You know that pair of shoes you’ve been eyeing at the mall that are totally amaze and will go perfectly with your favorite skirt? What about that awesome outfit you’ve been eyeing that you’ll be able to wear literally everywhere? Know how your wallet is empty? Yeah, we’ve been there and it sucks. But you don’t have to spend money to indulge in some retail therapy.
Go to the mall with your friends and try on a bunch of cute outfits. Walk around the dressing room like it’s a runway, snap some selfies and critique each other’s outfits like you’re guest-hosting “Fashion Police.” It’s a lot of fun, and seeing how great you look in the stuff you try on can motivate you to save some cash. And who knows, maybe you’ll even find some good deals you won’t have to save up for. At the very least, you’ll have fun with your friends and that’s always fabulous.
Get out of your comfort zone
Whether it’s asking someone out on a date, going out dancing (and being the first one on the dance floor!) or singing karaoke at Applebee’s, pushing yourself to do something you wouldn’t normally do is a total rush that can leave you feeling super-confident. The effect is intensified when you do something you’ve been wanting to do for awhile. So think about what you would do if you were braver, more outgoing, a better singer—and do it!
Go out for lunch
A big part of living a fabulous life is living every day like it’s a special occasion. You don’t need a reason (or a date) to go out to your favorite lunch place with the overpriced (but super-scrumptious) sandwiches. Save up some cash and treat yourself to a day out. A fancy lunch is the perfect compliment to a zero-dollar shopping spree. You won’t feel guilty for splurging on food because—hey, you need to get your energy back after all that runway-walking!
Feeling extra adventurous? Try a dish you’ve never tasted or a restaurant you’ve never been to. You might find a new favorite spot!
Sometimes we get so caught up in our daily lives, we forget to pay attention to the little things. That’s why it can mean so much when you compliment someone. Whether you notice their new shoes, or just let a friend know you enjoy their company, complimenting someone can totally make their day and can make you feel pretty good about yourself, too!
Learn something new
Few things are more fabulous than feeling smart. Take some time to read the newspaper—not just the comics or entertainment section!—browse random articles on Wikipedia to expand your understanding of various topics and maybe even teach yourself a new skill. Learn to cook your favorite dish, try to learn a different language, learn how to play your favorite song on the guitar. Not only will you learn something new but you’ll feel totally empowered knowing you did it yourself!
Do a good deed
You know the warm-and-fuzzy feeling you get when you give your BFF an awesome birthday present? You can have that feeling any time. Doing something like helping a friend accomplish a goal or getting them a surprise (even if it’s just paying for their latte on your regular coffee date) will make both of you feel great. Even better? Do something nice for a total stranger or volunteer for a local charity (check out VolunteerMatch.org to find volunteer opportunities that interest you). Even if you don’t get the warm-fuzzies, you’ll help someone in need.
Just like Carrie uses her column to express her thoughts and sort out life, finding an outlet for your emotions can help you find solutions to your problems and learn new things about yourself. Whether it’s keeping a diary, writing poetry, creating an inspiration board or even just singing along to a song you relate to, letting your feelings out can be an awesome release.
Be happy with what you have
It sounds the most cheesy, but sometimes the most fabulous feeling comes from being happy with the life you have. Whether it’s being single-and-loving-it or going thrift shopping for “label-less” fashion finds instead of big-name brands, knowing you can have a fabulous and fun life without turning into Carrie Bradshaw can be totally empowering.
